Yes, you should read the book!
The whole Say Yes to No program and movement began with a book. No: Why Kids – of All Ages – Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It . It was written in 2007 by Dr. David Walsh, psychologist and founder of The National Institute on Media and the Family.
In the book, Dr. Walsh paints a powerful picture of how Yes media messages screaming “More, Easy, Fast and Fun” undermine the critical character traits kids need to succeed in school and life.
The book is a great starting point for learning to Say Yes to No. It’s also a great catalyst for conversation.
- Read it on your own. Could you use a little parenting inspiration and encouragement? Need help understanding our media culture and navigating the power struggles and screen scenes? Dr. Walsh’s book No is filled with Big Ideas and down-to-earth advice you can put into practice immediately.
- Read it with others. A SYTN BookRead is an organized group of people who are reading the book (No) at the same time and meeting periodically to discuss the book and share impressions, questions and experiences. It’s much like a book club, except the group typically disbands after the book (and conversation) is finished. There is just enough structure to make it productive and fun.
If you’d like to organize a Book Read, it couldn’t be easier. Absolutely everything you need to do (and know) is contained in our Book Read Toolkit.
