What is SYTN?
Say Yes to No (SYTN) is a new parent education program–a series of 5 workshops filled with practical strategies to help parents raise more self-aware, self-disciplined, self-reliant kids. It’s also a community movement that’s sweeping the nation.
SYTN began as a book, written by Dr. David Walsh, founder of the National Institute on Media and the Family, that was read and embraced by thousands of parents, independently and in community Book Reads. Two states, Minnesota and Michigan, mobilized an unprecedented coalition of supporters to bring the SYTN message to even more families.
The ideas in the book struck a deep chord, and parents began asking for more: more answers, more tools, more specifics. Thus the SYTN program was born! Today, an unprecedented coalition of parents, community leaders and educators are supporting the effort–and advancing the conversation.
Parents learning together. SYTN groups are typically led by trained parent educators, and are organized and sponsored by a school, PTA/PTO, early education provider or church group. Some key ideas covered in the program include:
- The importance of self-discipline to a child’s development
- Setting and consistently enforcing limits and consequences
- Avoiding power struggles
- Helpful versus unhelpful praise
- Steps to prevent or reverse Discipline Deficit Disorder (DDD)
Yes, it works. SYTN is making a difference in homes, schools and communities across America. It’s helping parents, teachers and kids. To find out how, hear what others are saying. We invite you to get involved!
